Description
Dal Vulcano Aglianico del Vulture DOC is a distinguished, full‑bodied red wine produced in the volcanic hills surrounding Monte Vulture, in the province of Potenza, Basilicata, southern Italy. This unique and ancient terroir is defined by deep, mineral‑rich volcanic soils formed by millennia of volcanic activity, combined with high altitudes, abundant sunshine, and marked temperature swings between warm days and cool nights. These conditions create the perfect environment for the Aglianico grape—one of Italy’s oldest and most noble native varieties, brought to the region by Greek settlers more than 2,500 years ago—allowing it to develop its signature depth, structure, and aromatic complexity. Classified under the DOC designation, this wine follows strict production regulations that guarantee its origin, authenticity, and consistent high quality, fully expressing the raw, powerful character of its volcanic homeland.
Made exclusively from 100% Aglianico grapes, the harvest takes place late in the season, typically between late October and early November, when the fruit has reached full phenolic ripeness, achieving the ideal balance of concentrated dark fruit, bright natural acidity, and firm yet ripe tannins. The grapes are carefully hand‑selected and harvested to ensure only the healthiest, most perfectly mature bunches are used. After gentle destemming and soft crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks at 26–30 °C, followed by prolonged maceration on the skins lasting 15 to 20 days. This extended contact allows the wine to extract its deep, intense colour, rich aromatic layers, and solid tannic backbone. Following fermentation, the wine matures for several months in stainless steel or large neutral oak vessels, preserving its vibrant fruit and distinct mineral character while gaining smoothness and harmony before being bottled.
Visually, it displays an intense, deep ruby‑red hue with bright violet reflections when young, gradually evolving into rich garnet and brick‑red tones as it ages. On the nose, it offers a complex and layered bouquet: intense notes of ripe black cherry, plum, blackberry, and dried fig blend harmoniously with delicate floral hints of violet, followed by savoury touches of leather, tobacco, damp earth, licorice, and subtle spicy undertones of black pepper and cinnamon. A prominent mineral undertone—earthy, stony, and distinctly volcanic—adds remarkable depth and elegance, making the wine immediately recognizable as a true expression of its terroir.
On the palate, it is full‑bodied, powerful, and exceptionally well‑structured, with firm yet refined tannins and a vibrant, fresh acidity that provides excellent balance and outstanding ageing potential. The flavours mirror the nose perfectly, with concentrated dark fruit, savoury notes, and pronounced mineral complexity leading to a long, persistent, and pleasantly dry finish. With an alcohol content of approximately 13.5–14% by volume, it is a wine of great character: it can be enjoyed young after careful decanting to soften its structure, but it truly shines when cellared for 8 to 12 years or even longer, developing further complexity, smoother tannins, and more nuanced secondary notes. It is best served at 18–20 °C to fully express its rich aromas and structural depth.
Dal Vulcano Aglianico del Vulture DOC pairs perfectly with a wide range of hearty, flavourful dishes, making it ideal for both traditional meals and special occasions. It is an exceptional match for rich pasta dishes with slow‑cooked meat ragù, wild mushroom sauces, or truffle preparations, as well as for savoury risottos and baked pasta. It complements grilled and roasted red meats, beef, lamb, game such as venison or wild boar, and slow‑braised stews and meat casseroles, standing up perfectly to their bold flavours. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses including Pecorino Romano, Provolone, aged Caciocavallo, and mature Parmigiano‑Reggiano, as well as with savoury charcuterie, cured meats, and meat terrines. Its firm structure and bright acidity also make it a wonderful companion for dishes with earthy ingredients like mushrooms, truffles, and root vegetables, offering great versatility and remarkable presence at the table.
