Description
Annibale Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC is a rich, characterful red wine produced in the sun‑drenched region of Abruzzo, along the eastern coast of central Italy. This territory, nestled between the majestic Apennine Mountains and the crystal‑clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, benefits from a unique and favourable climate: warm, sunny days that allow the grapes to ripen fully, cool sea breezes that refresh the vines, and significant temperature variations between day and night. These conditions, combined with calcareous‑clay and stony soils that ensure excellent drainage and force the vines to grow deep roots, create the ideal environment for the Montepulciano grape. This native variety has been cultivated here for centuries and is renowned for producing wines with intense colour, generous fruit flavours, soft tannins and great drinkability. Classified under the DOC designation, this wine follows strict production regulations that guarantee its origin, authenticity and consistent high quality, fully expressing the genuine spirit and terroir of Abruzzo.
Made exclusively from carefully selected Montepulciano grapes, the harvest takes place in mid‑October, when the fruit reaches perfect phenolic ripeness, achieving the ideal balance between concentrated natural sugars, bright fresh acidity and ripe, well‑integrated tannins. The grapes are hand‑picked to ensure only the healthiest and most mature bunches are chosen, then gently destemmed and crushed to preserve their delicate aromatic compounds. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks at 24–28 °C, a process designed to enhance the fruit’s natural character. Maceration on the skins lasts for 10–14 days, allowing the wine to extract its deep, vibrant ruby colour, rich fruit flavours and smooth tannins without becoming overly heavy or astringent. After fermentation, the wine matures for several months in stainless steel and large neutral oak vats, where it refines its balance, softens its structure and develops greater harmony before being bottled, ready to showcase its immediate, approachable charm.
Visually, it presents an intense, deep ruby‑red colour with striking violet reflections that slowly evolve into warm garnet tones as it ages. On the nose, it offers an abundant and inviting aromatic bouquet dominated by ripe red and dark fruit: juicy black cherry, wild plum, sun‑ripened blackberry and sweet wild berry jam, beautifully complemented by subtle floral hints of violet, notes of dried Mediterranean herbs, a touch of sweet tobacco and delicate spicy undertones of black pepper and cinnamon. On the palate, it is medium to full‑bodied, smooth and wonderfully well‑rounded, with soft, velvety tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that keeps it perfectly balanced and very drinkable. The flavours mirror the nose beautifully, with concentrated dark fruit leading to a long, satisfying finish with a pleasant, subtle savoury undertone. With an alcohol content of around 13.5% by volume, it is a versatile and generous wine, enjoyable young within the first 2–3 years after release, but also capable of developing greater complexity and softer, more refined notes over 3–5 years when stored properly in a cool, dark place. It is best served at 17–19 °C to fully bring out its rich aromas and smooth, velvety texture.
Annibale Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC pairs perfectly with a wide range of dishes, making it an excellent choice for everyday meals, family gatherings and special occasions alike. It is a classic and natural match for rich pasta dishes with slow‑cooked meat ragù, hearty tomato sauces or roasted vegetables, as well as for traditional wood‑fired pizzas and savoury mushroom or meat risottos. It complements grilled and roasted red meats, pork, lamb, sausages and slow‑cooked stews and braised dishes, bringing out the savoury notes of the food without overpowering them. It also goes beautifully with cured meats, salami, prosciutto and mixed antipasti, as well as medium‑aged cheeses such as Pecorino, Provolone, aged Caciocavallo and mild Gorgonzola. Its balanced acidity and approachable fruit character also make it suitable for roasted poultry, rabbit and flavourful vegetable‑based dishes, offering great versatility for any dining table.
