Description

Petruccio Valpolicella DOC is a classic, approachable red wine produced in the famous Valpolicella hills near Verona, in the Veneto region of northern Italy. This charming landscape, with its gentle slopes, calcareous-clay soils rich in mineral deposits, and mild climate sheltered by the Lessini Mountains and tempered by the breezes from nearby Lake Garda, creates the perfect conditions for growing the traditional native grapes: Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, the historic varieties that have defined Valpolicella winemaking for centuries. Classified under the DOC designation, this wine adheres to strict production rules that guarantee its origin, authenticity, and consistent quality, capturing the fresh, vibrant character of its unique terroir and representing the true everyday soul of the region.

Made from a carefully balanced blend of Corvina, which provides structure and aroma, Corvinone, which adds depth and body, and Rondinella, which contributes softness and bright acidity, the winemaking process begins with the harvest in early October, when the fruit reaches the ideal balance of ripeness, natural sugars, and fresh acidity. The grapes are hand-selected to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used, then gently destemmed and crushed before fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 22–26°C. This controlled environment preserves the bright, primary aromas of the fruit, while short maceration on the skins for 7–10 days extracts just enough colour and soft tannins, giving the wine a light but pleasant structure without ever losing its signature freshness and immediate drinkability. After fermentation, it rests for several months in stainless steel or large neutral oak vats to refine its flavours and achieve perfect harmony, before being bottled ready to be enjoyed.

In the glass, it shows a brilliant, lively ruby-red colour with delicate purple highlights that gradually turn to soft garnet as it ages. On the nose, it offers an inviting and straightforward bouquet dominated by fresh red fruits: sour cherry, wild strawberry, and ripe red plum, beautifully complemented by subtle floral hints of violet and a light, pleasant touch of aromatic herbs and mild spice. On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied, smooth and exceptionally well-balanced, with bright, zesty acidity that gives it great liveliness and keeps it refreshing, alongside soft, gentle tannins that make it very easy to enjoy even without long decanting. The flavour mirrors the nose perfectly, with juicy red fruit leading to a clean, dry, and pleasantly fresh finish that leaves a lingering hint of cherry on the palate. With an alcohol content of around 12% by volume, it is an extremely versatile wine, suitable for almost any occasion, and is best served slightly chilled at 16–18°C to fully enhance its fresh and fruity character.

Petruccio Valpolicella DOC pairs perfectly with a wide variety of dishes, making it an ideal choice for everyday meals and casual gatherings alike. It matches wonderfully with traditional Italian cuisine, including simple pasta dishes with tomato or vegetable-based sauces, rich ragù, and fresh risotto prepared with seasonal vegetables or mushrooms. It is also the classic companion for authentic wood-fired pizza and focaccia topped with herbs or cured meats. When it comes to main courses, it complements light grilled meats, roasted pork, poultry, and rabbit, as well as savoury cold cuts, cured ham, and mixed antipasti. Its balanced acidity also makes it a great match for fresh and medium-aged cheeses such as Asiago, Monte Veronese, mild Pecorino, and young Provolone, while its light body ensures it does not overpower lighter vegetable dishes and fresh salads. A true expression of Veneto’s winemaking tradition, this wine offers excellent quality and remarkable versatility, making it a staple for any wine lover’s collection. Buy online from WineX.hk GAG
