Description
Za’ Monaca Irpinia Aglianico DOC is a distinguished and characterful red wine produced in the hills of Irpinia, in the province of Avellino, Campania, southern Italy. This ancient wine-growing region is defined by volcanic soils rich in minerals, significant altitude, and a wide temperature range between day and night—conditions that are perfectly suited to the Aglianico grape, one of Italy’s oldest and most noble native varieties, introduced to the area by Greek settlers over two millennia ago. Classified under the DOC designation, this wine adheres to strict production rules that guarantee its origin, authenticity, and consistent high quality, capturing the true essence of Irpinia’s unique terroir.
Made exclusively from 100% Aglianico grapes, the winemaking process begins with a late harvest, typically carried out between late October and early November. This extended ripening period allows the fruit to develop its signature balance of concentrated fruit, bright natural acidity, and firm, structured tannins. Grapes are carefully hand‑selected and harvested only when fully mature, ensuring the highest quality raw material. After gentle destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks at 26–30 °C, followed by prolonged maceration on the skins for 15 to 20 days. This extended contact extracts deep colour, rich aromatic complexity, and the solid structure that defines Aglianico. The wine then matures for several months in stainless steel or large neutral oak vessels, preserving its vibrant fruit and mineral character while gaining smoothness and harmony before being bottled.
In appearance, Za’ Monaca Irpinia Aglianico DOC shows a deep, intense ruby‑red hue with bright violet reflections when young, gradually evolving into rich garnet and brick‑red tones as it ages. On the nose, it offers a complex and layered bouquet: intense notes of ripe black cherry, plum, blackberry, and dried fig blend harmoniously with floral hints of violet, followed by savoury touches of leather, tobacco, earth, licorice, and subtle spices such as black pepper and cinnamon. A distinct mineral undertone, derived from the volcanic soil, adds depth and elegance to the aromatic profile.
On the palate, it is full‑bodied, powerful, and remarkably well‑structured, with firm yet refined tannins and a vibrant, fresh acidity that provides excellent balance and outstanding ageing potential. The flavours mirror the nose perfectly, with concentrated dark fruit, savoury notes, and mineral complexity leading to a long, persistent, and pleasantly dry finish. With an alcohol content of approximately 14% by volume, it is a wine of great personality: it can be enjoyed young after careful decanting, but it truly shines when cellared for 8 to 12 years or even longer, developing further complexity and smoothness over time. It is best served at 18–20 °C to fully express its rich aromas and structural depth.
