The Koshi-no Shinobu Blended Whisky – Mizunara Wood Finish is a refined Japanese blended whisky crafted by Niigata Kotsu Shuzo, a distillery nestled in the pristine Niigata Prefecture, an area renowned for its exceptionally pure spring water and cool, humid climate – ideal conditions for maturing spirits of outstanding quality. This expression is part of the celebrated Shinobu range, whose name translates to “endurance” and “dedication”, reflecting the patient, meticulous approach that defines Japanese whisky making.

Unlike pure malt whiskies, this is a carefully balanced blend of selected malt and grain whiskies, chosen for their complementary characteristics. The spirit first matures in traditional American white oak and ex-bourbon casks, which lay down a soft, sweet foundation of vanilla, caramel, and ripe orchard fruit. It then undergoes a final finishing period in rare, hand-selected Japanese Mizunara oak casks – a wood highly prized by master blenders around the world for its unique, one-of-a-kind aromatic profile. Mizunara grows slowly, resulting in a dense, tight grain that imparts complex, exotic notes not found in European or American oak.

The result is a whisky of remarkable depth and harmony. On the nose, it opens with bright aromas of honey, dried apricot, and toasted cereal, quickly followed by the signature scents of Mizunara: delicate sandalwood, light cedar, subtle spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and a gentle hint of coconut and white flowers such as jasmine and osmanthus. There is also a faint, pleasant touch of orange zest and mild leather, adding further layers of complexity.

On the palate, it is smooth, medium-bodied, and well-rounded, with a silky texture that coats the tongue. The sweetness of malt and caramel is perfectly balanced by soft oak tannins and warm, gentle spices. Flavours of dried fruit, toasted nuts, and a whisper of dark chocolate unfold gradually, leading to a long, satisfying finish that lingers with notes of sandalwood and a subtle, pleasant dryness.

This whisky is incredibly versatile. It is wonderful enjoyed neat or with a single drop of mineral water to unlock its full aromatic range. It also works beautifully over ice, or as a premium base for classic and modern cocktails alike. When it comes to pairing, it is an excellent companion for mild to medium-bodied cigars – such as Dominican or Nicaraguan blends – whose earthy, creamy notes complement the whisky’s sweetness and spice.
