Description
Àlia Barbera d’Alba DOC is a vibrant and characterful red wine produced in the celebrated Alba district of the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy. Nestled among rolling hills with calcareous-clay soils and a favorable temperate climate, this area is widely recognized as the ideal home for the Barbera grape, one of Italy’s most beloved native red varieties. Classified under the DOC designation, this wine adheres to strict production standards that guarantee its origin, quality, and authentic expression of the local terroir.
Made primarily from 100% Barbera grapes, the winemaking process begins with careful harvesting in early to mid-October, when the fruit has reached the perfect balance between ripeness, natural acidity, and sugar content. The grapes are selected and processed with great care, undergoing gentle crushing and destemming before fermentation. This takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at around 25–28°C, allowing the wine to develop its bright fruit character while preserving its signature fresh acidity. Maceration on the skins lasts for approximately 7–10 days, extracting just the right amount of color and soft tannins without overpowering the wine’s lively nature. After fermentation, the wine ages briefly in steel tanks to preserve its freshness and aromatic intensity before being bottled, ready to express its full personality.
In appearance, Àlia Barbera d’Alba DOC shows a brilliant, deep ruby-red color with vibrant purple reflections that become slightly garnet as it ages. On the nose, it offers an inviting and expressive bouquet dominated by ripe red and dark fruit notes: fresh cherry, wild strawberry, plum, and blackberry, beautifully complemented by subtle hints of violet, rose petal, and delicate spicy undertones of cinnamon and black pepper. There is also a pleasant touch of fresh acidity and a faint mineral note typical of the region’s soils, adding further depth and complexity.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, smooth, and exceptionally well-balanced, with a bright, refreshing acidity that gives it great drinkability and structure. The tannins are soft and velvety, never aggressive, allowing the rich fruit flavors to take center stage. The taste mirrors the nose perfectly, with juicy red berry and stone fruit notes leading to a clean, persistent, and pleasantly fruity finish. With an alcohol content of around 13.5% by volume, it is versatile and approachable, suitable for everyday enjoyment as well as for pairing with a wide range of dishes. It is best served at a temperature of 16–18°C, which enhances its aromas and brings out its natural freshness.
Àlia Barbera d’Alba DOC is the perfect representation of the classic Barbera style: a wine that combines richness and freshness, power and elegance.
