Description
Piccarda Donati Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., 13.5% vol, is an authentic expression of Tuscan winemaking tradition, produced in the historic heart of the Chianti Classico region. This wine embodies the unique character of its land and centuries of craftsmanship, representing one of Italy’s most renowned and respected wine designations.
Origin and Terroir
The Chianti Classico area lies between Florence and Siena, a landscape of rolling hills recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The soil here is primarily composed of galestro, a rocky limestone-rich earth, and alberese, which ensures excellent drainage and forces vines to develop deep, strong roots. Combined with a mild Mediterranean climate with warm sunny days and cool nights that preserve freshness, this terroir gives the grapes bright acidity, intense aromas, and distinctive mineral notes. The name Piccarda Donati pays tribute to Tuscany’s rich cultural heritage, linking the wine to the history and spirit of the region.
Grape Variety and Production
Made following the strict rules of Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., this wine is produced mainly from Sangiovese grapes, the noble red variety of Tuscany, with small additions of traditional complementary grapes. Harvest is carried out manually at perfect ripeness to ensure the best quality. After careful selection and gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh, fruity character. The wine then ages for a minimum of 12 months, partly in large oak barrels, gaining balance and softness without losing its lively personality.
Tasting Profile
Piccarda Donati Chianti Classico D.O.C.G. shows a brilliant ruby red color with bright reflections. On the nose, it is elegant and intense, offering classic notes of red cherry, wild strawberry, and plum, enriched with delicate floral hints of violet and subtle earthy and spicy undertones. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, fresh and well-balanced, with the characteristic lively acidity of Sangiovese and fine, smooth tannins. The finish is clean, persistent, and pleasantly fruity.
Food Pairing and Enjoyment
Versatile and food-friendly, this wine is perfect with traditional Italian dishes: tomato-based pasta, risottos, grilled meats, cured meats, and medium-aged cheeses. Best served at 16–18°C, it can be enjoyed young for its vibrant fruit or aged a few years for greater complexity.
Piccarda Donati Chianti Classico D.O.C.G. is a true expression of its territory, authentic, balanced, and full of character, representing the best of Tuscan winemaking.
